LABUAN: Local Member of Parliament Datuk Suhaili Abdul Rahman (pic) has been appointed Chairman of Labuan Corporation (LC) for a two-year term, effective this month.

His appointment letter was signed by acting Finance Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, who is also the acting Prime Minister.

Announcing this in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday, Suhaili said he was unable to make an announcement earlier "because he was tied up with meetings and functions."

As Chairman of LC, Suhaili
would also automatically become Chairman of the Land Executive Committee and attend the fortnightly Federal Cabinet meetings.

Suhaili said these positions would put him in a better position to serve the people of Labuan and pledged to do his best for the good of the island.
Asked if his new position would affect his role as MP, he said he would still be the same old Suhaili and maintain a close relationship with the people.

When I sit in LC meetings, I will act like a chairman and follow all the protocols and procedures, but when in Labuan, I as the MP will act like an MP.... no one should fear about my changing lifestyle," Suhaili explained.

The LC chairman post is a high-profile position, being the chief executive of the island, and those who have held this position previously were former Finance Minister Tun Daim Zainudin, Advisor to the Finance Ministry Datuk Mustapha Mohammad and former Secretary-General of the Finance Ministry, Tan Sri Othman Rijal.

After being a Federal Territory for 18years, this is the first time that a "local boy" has been appointed to the post.

Suhaili, 42, holds a MBA in Strategic Marketing from the University and a Fellowship of Institute of Professional Finance manger (UK).

He is also presently the Umno Chairman here and also Chairman of the Labuan Tourism Action Council as well as the Labuan Sports Council.

LC, formed in 2001 under LC 2000 Act, is a powerful agency that oversees the island's overall development, including economic, social, commercial, tourism, infrastructure and industrial aspects.

The agency came about after the Labuan Development Authority was dissolved and merged with the Labuan Municipal Council.
